Four girls were involved in two fights.

Officers returned the next day and held talks with staff.

While police were present at the school two staff members' cars in the grounds were damaged by three teenagers who stole a satellite navigation system. They were arrested.

It is not known if they were from the school.

Head teacher Colin Bell said: "Police were called to an incident after school on Monday involving a group of youths with no connection to the South Leeds High, but no arrests were made.

"The school is part of the local neighbourhood policing team's (NPT) patrol area.

"We asked them to temporarily increase this presence to reassure staff and young people and minimise the disruption this incident could have on our school community."

Insp Steve Palmer of the local NPT said considerable "cohesive" work was going on at the school involving staff, the police and the local community to avert such incidents.

Beeston and Holbeck Labour Councillor David Congreve said: "A lot of work has been put into the school through the youth service and other services to try and integrate the pupils from the former Matthew Murray and Merlyn Rees high schools."

The £20m school was set up in 2004 by merging the mainly white Merlyn Rees High in Belle Isle with Matthew Murray in Holbeck, which has a large proportion of Asian pupils.
In September, 2005, fighting broke out at the school's Belle Isle campus after a gang of youths – who were not pupils – pelted classrooms with stones before going onto the school grounds and taunting students.

Several brawls broke out involving dozens of teenagers with police officers, supported by the force helicopter, called to restore calm.

Last Updated: 02 March 2007Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
